‘Twas the Year of the Offseason

As I said on the Life of a Philly Fan podcast, it’s the year of the offseason in Philadelphia. I wanted to write an article explaining just what that means and why but, instead, figured I’d do something a little different and make a of grim topic seem a bit more exciting. Being that it’s the Holiday season, I decided to put my take into a poem like “A Visit from St. Nicholas.” Now, is this because I’m creative? I would love to say yes. In a more realistic scenario, however, it is more likely we have endured so many debilitating disappointments as Philly fans since the Super Bowl, that I’ve finally snapped. I  started thinking in rhymes. Either way it’s an entertaining read if I do say so myself so enjoy! Or don’t and tell me I’m losing my mind over sports. I don’t care either way.

A Visit from St. Disappointing End to a Season

by Vince Scian

‘Twas the year of the offseason, when all through the city,

Not a team was impressing, especially the Flyers and Gritty;

The money bags hung by the ballpark with care,

In hopes that Bryce Harper soon would be there;

The Sixers took one series but the season, after Boston, was dead;

While visions of a run next year danced in their heads;

When Colangelo, in his collars, got himself fired ‘cause of Twitter,

Brett Brown stepped in at GM, as the temporary sitter,

Then at Malvern Prep, Bronny Jr made such a clatter,

Philadelphians sprang to Twitter to perpetuate the chatter.

Away to LA LeBron flew like a flash,

They had stolen Manny too the reactions were crass.

September put an end to the Phillies far-fallen season,

Hope followed, however. Money was the reason.

When what to Matt Klentak’s eyes did appear,

A deal for Jean Segura to start off the year,

With an owner willing to be a little bit stupid,

The path to an all-star free agent became very lucid.

Sadly for the Eagles, the losses they came,

The injury bug bit did not discriminate by name:

No, Darby! no, Derek! no Rodney and Jalen!

Gone, Ajayi! gone, Jordan! gone, Wallace and Darren!

To the doctors for surgery! to rehab, no football!

No playoff hope! No playoff hope! No playoff hope at all!

As the season went on, the losses and injuries grew

Howie is met with an obstacle, there’s much work to do;

So to the 2019 draft, our thoughts must go

Aim for the middle and not below

This football season, the Eagles can call it a goof

‘Cause it’s the Year of the Offseason and this is the proof.

Merry Offseason to all! And to all a good free agency and trade market!
