Five Flyers Observations : Home Domination Of The Blackhawks Continues

The Flyers defeated the Blackhawks 4-0 today at the Wells Fargo Center. Extending their point streak to 6 games and a 3-game win streak.

Sean Couturier led the way with 2 goals and an assist to fuel the Flyers. Claude Giroux added a goal and 2 assists. Moving himself to within 1 point of 700 on his career.

Brian Elliott stopped all 33 shots he faced. Improving his record to 6-5-0 on the season.

The Flyers are now 5-0-1 in their last 6 games after starting the season 4-7-0.

Here are 4 more observations from the Flyers 4-0 win over the Blackhawks…

Moose Stands Tall

Something the Flyers have struggled with this season is their goal-tending. However, over the past 6-games, the Flyers goalies have shown-up.

Over the past 6 games, the Flyers goalies have 5-0-1 record with a 2.33 GAA & a .926 %. Both numbers are almost a full point better than their season numbers.

Today, Brian Elliott showed his #1 ability. Shutting out the Blackhawks with a 33-save shutout. Elliott made timely save after timely save to keep the momentum on the Flyers side today.

Over Elliott’s past 3 starts, he is 3-0-0 with a 1.33 GAA & a .953 %.

Claude Giroux Breaks More Records

A career Flyer, it was just a matter of time until Flyers Captain, Claude Giroux, would move up the Flyers record books. Today, Giroux moved up a couple more leaderboards.

Giroux passed Rick MacLeish for 4th on the Flyers all-time points list. He also comes to within 1 point of 700 career points in a Flyers uniform.

Dating back to 2012, Giroux has 549 points in 547 games. Some people don’t believe Giroux isn’t among the elite in the NHL. Well, over a point-per-game over the past 5+ seasons is amongst the elite in my book.

Giroux now has 7 goals and 15 assists on the season. Well on his way to his 2nd career 100 point season.

Penalty Kill Ends Streak

The Flyers special teams have been one of the worst in the league this season. Coming into today, the Flyers had allowed a power-play goal in 9-straight games. However, today that changed.

Flyers penalty kill was a perfect 4 for 4 today. Ending a streak of 19 for last 30 and 9 streak games allowing a power-play goal. However, today wasn’t the start of better penalty killing.

Over the last 6 games, the Flyers penalty kill was 14 for 20. Allowing on one goal per-game. Today, that ended and turnaround over the past 6 games extended to 18 for 24. That is 75%. A lot better than the Flyers season total of 66%.

Home-Ice Advantage

The Flyers have gotten off to a slow start at home this season. Going 2-4-0 in their first 6 home games. However, the Flyers are now 2-0-0 to start their 5-game home-stand.  Including a win today over the Chicago Blackhawks.

But, the Blackhawks domination at home has been going on for a long time. Today, the Flyers won their 15th straight home contest against the Blackhawks. A stretch that dates back to November 9, 1996.

With the win, the Flyers are now back to .500 at home and can be on the plus side of .500 for the first time this season with a win on Tuesday against the Panthers.

Result : Flyers 4 – Blackhawks 0, WIN

Record : 9 – 7 – 1

Next Game : 11 / 13 Florida Panthers, Philadelphia PA, NBCSports Philadelphia 7:00pm
