Demarco Murray Is Retiring From Sliding On 3rd & 1 Carries

Today, we say goodbye to one of the faces of some of the darkest days in Eagles history (in my lifetime at least).

Here lies Demarco Murray: a downhill runner who didn’t fit Chip Kelly’s system and was run into the ground by the Dallas Cowboys.

I’ll never forget the off-season in which we acquired Murray. We seemingly replaced Lesean McCoy in the backfield with the leagues leading rusher the year before and added a promising young linebacker in the process. We added a valuable piece in free agency, causing us to win a related trade (I guess the jury is still out on that one). I was so excited to see the seemingly new and improved Philadelphia Eagles, led at the forefront by a star in Murray. Like all summer flings, it was dead once fall rolled around.

The once promising acquisition now looked like a guy stuck in between gears. He was touted as a Dodge Charger, during his short lived Eagles career, he was more of a Prius. We were left with a broken running back, a sleeve-happy quarterback and despair.

Looking back, it’s truly astounding how quickly we came in what was a short amount of time. Now two seasons removed from Chip Kelly not attending the Christmas party, trades like shipping Murray off to Tennessee have made Howie Roseman into somewhat of a folk hero, and also a Super Bowl Champion.

Here’s to you, Demarco Murray.  Without your miserable one year stint in the Eagles backfield, maybe I don’t appreciate our Super Bowl victory as much as I do right now.
